Masters in advanced Architectural Design University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
“The Chamber of Memories” designed & built by myself & colleague Neil Kane as part of our joint master’s project which dealt with two sites in Ireland & one in Scotland and went on to specifically focus on the Scottish Highland site. The Chamber is a memorial to the Highland clearances and an interface for the collection of oral tradition. The overall design acts in metaphors, its positioning a partial immersion in the soil represents the past where memories are found, the seats motion upward towards the porthole light represents the future. It is here that the question “what is your memory of home” is answered / recounted into a database.
The rusted steel exterior encouraging decay blends into this landscape rendering the Chamber almost invisible against the natural backdrop. It has become self effacing and unobtrusive. On entering the user mounts the seat and uses the control pad to elevate & descend to both the recording & listening device respectively. A battery powered hydraulic ram facilitates this movement.
The final presentation consisted of scale drawings, paintings, photomontage, models, a project book & a half hour documentary film.
